The secret of staying happy
THE SECRET OF STAYING HAPPY
By ROHIT JOSHI
“You are what you eat!” – Well, literally. You might have thought how suddenly you fall sick, when you eat junk food everyday, why are you not losing weight and why your favourite shirt still doesn’t fit you? It all depends on what you eat, which in turn rules, how and what you think, and the way you feel!
WHAT EXACTLY DOES THIS MEAN?
It is all related to DOPAMINE. It is an organic chemical created inside our brain, and it plays several important roles in making us feel happy. It is responsible for one of the most important and satisfaction – based reward mechanisms, the one which gives you the happy feeling of achievement. (Yes, the one when you finished first in that race, and also the one when you win an award)
HOW IMPORTANT IS IT?
The equilibrium of Dopamine inside the body is of utmost importance for the healthy and happy well-being of an individual. Any imbalance can cause severe permanent damage, not only to the functioning of the brain, but also to other organs. It is also known to enhance your productivity, i.e if you maintain the right balance, you would be able to get your most important things done better, in an efficient way and thus, would in turn, feel more satisfied.
HOW DO I MAINTAIN THE BALANCE?
There are multiple ways in which you can actually regulate and control the dopamine levels(WITHOUT EXTERNAL MEDICINES OR DRUGS)
A quick 10 min run, or a short intense workout to get your blood flowing early in the day, gives you that boost of dopamine early, which sets the tone for you for the day ahead.
LISTENING TO MUSIC:
It doesn’t matter if you follow the top-tens list or the latest tracks, if you know what kind of music makes you feel lively, and makes you look forward to the tasks at hand, you’re good. Make a playlist of the same, and mix and listen to them, while you commute to your work or go about your daily chores, to get yourself in the grove.
EATING THE RIGHT THINGS AT THE RIGHT TIME:
Including these happy foods in your daily diet, (from breakfast to dinner) would enhance not only your overall metabolism, but also give you the much needed dopamine stability in this stressful routine. Instead of hogging on two heavy meals and keeping a large gap between your meals, it is advisable to eat every 2-3 hours and space out your meals.
Green Tea (Upto 5 cups per day)
RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS:
In this stressful world, where in we value and plan to a T, of every hour, so that we are in sync with the constant social updates of someone travelling to exotic locations, posting, liking and sharing their moments of how they are living up the grand life, it is easy to forget of the things which actually do matter – OUR LIVES. We are so engrossed and self-obessed with this constant race to reach and find that elusive happiness, that we forget the very fabric of essentials – these small moments, which we actually miss – the meeting with your grandparents, a call with that old friend, buying something for your parents.
Somehow, we all have forgotten that these small moments help bring smiles and make memories, which is what everyone is striving for. It’s time for us to understand and acknowledge this fact, and actively put our actions to make our and the lives around us, a little more happy 😄
STAY HAPPY! 😄
